Survival:
The main goal in The Hunger Games is survival. The book deals with the struggle for self-preservation that the people of Panem face in their Districts and the Hunger Games in which they have to participate. They have to try to keep themselves alive. Trying to survive is hard because people are dying of starvation all of the time. Surviving is nearly impossible because of starvation. Starvation, and need for materials that the citizens run into both in and outside of the arena creates helplessness that the main characters try to overcome in their fight for survival. Katniss's accuracy with the bow and arrow comes from her need to hunt in order to provide food for her family giving them an advantage for survival. This necessity results in the development of skills that are useful to her in the Games, and represents her rejection of the Capitol's rules in the face of life-threatening situations. Another great disadvantage is poverty. There is a great amount of poverty in Panem.
Friendship:
In a friendship you are supposed to look after each other also. Gale and Katniss were good friends. They hunted together and had each others backs all the time back in District 12. If Katniss' family was struggling Gale would give them more food then he gave himself because of there closeness. Also Katniss and Rue were good friends. They connected in the Games and decided to become a team to eliminate the other tributes. They got quite far until a girl killed Rue when Katniss left her alone. Friendship and love were two key things besides survival that would help during The Hunger Games.
Love:
Love and friendship was a big part of The Hunger Games. Peeta and Katniss were able to prevail in the games because their love towards each other made them a team. If you love each other that means you will stick up for one another. Another example of love is when Katniss' younger sister Prim got picked. Katniss then took her place because she couldn't let her young fragile sister try and participate in the deadly, gory Hunger Games.
Pain:
Pain is never a good feeling. Unfortunately, this happens a lot throughout The Hunger Games. Pain normally occurs in the games by the fact that you just killed somebody or someone close to you gets killed in the field of battle. Katniss faces pain in The Hunger Games when she sees her good friend Rue get murdered right in front of her eyes. Katniss is not the only character who faces great pain though. Peeta faces pain not only in the leg injury he received, but that he is afraid to let Katniss go out alone into the arena. e also feels pain when he doesn't think Katniss loves him back. Pain comes in many different ways physical, mental and emotional pain. These different ways of pain are demonstrated in The Hunger Games.
